All of the suggested solutions are working nicely on my Intel MacBook Pro. However, we received a couple of feedbacks in recent days. They complained it was impossible to create a macOS USB installer on M1 Mac, including Big Sur, Monterey and Ventura.<\/p>\n<p>When they ran the <em>createinstallmedia<\/em> command like this one in Terminal:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>sudo \/Applications\/Install\\ macOS\\ Monterey.app\/Contents\/Resources\/createinstallmedia &#8211;volume \/Volumes\/USBName<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Terminal returns the following error:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>Password: <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Killed: 9<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This error tells the macOS to stop the current process and all of the resource associated with this process will be released because the code signature of this app was not valid. Simply put, this code tells you the <em>createinstallmedia<\/em> command failed and you are unable to create a bootable macOS installer for this time.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Code_Signature_on_Mac\"><\/span>What is Code Signature on Mac?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For reference, code signing is a security mechanism in macOS that inject a snip of verification code in each app. The code is generated by Apple so it is quite safe. The purpose of code signing is to prevent Mac from malware and virus attack from installed apps. By default, all apps in Mac App Store are code signed by Apple. Third-party apps also needs code signature since macOS 15 (Catalina). If the app does not have a valid code signature, it would fail to run.<\/p>\n<p>What is more, Apple Silicon Mac (M1 &amp; M2) has additional code signing requirements for apps. That&#8217;s why <em>createinstallmedia<\/em> command gets more chance for failure on M1 Mac.<\/p>\n<p>Now, here comes the question: how to fix this error so we can make a bootable <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/how-to-install-macos-ventura-on-unsupported-macs\/\">macOS installer on a M1 Mac<\/a>? Don&#8217;t worry, the following tricks will help you get out of the problem.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fix_1_Code_Sign_createinstallmedia_Command\"><\/span>Fix #1: Code Sign createinstallmedia Command<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is the quickest way to fix M1 Mac can&#8217;t create bootable macOS USB. Make sure you have a valid <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/how-to-install-two-copies-of-macos-on-a-mac\/\">copy of macOS installer<\/a> app in Application folder.<\/p>\n<p>Now, open Terminal app and go to the Resource folder of macOS install app:<\/p>\n<p><strong>cd \/Applications\/Install\\ macOS\\ Monterey.app\/Contents\/Resources\/<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next, install xCode Command Line Developer Tools, which is required by the <em>codesign<\/em> command to be used in next step.<\/p>\n<p><strong>xcode-select &#8211;install<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1097\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/xcode-select-1024x509.png\" alt=\"xcode select\" width=\"724\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/xcode-select-1024x509.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/xcode-select-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/xcode-select-768x382.png 768w, https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/xcode-select.png 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After that, code sign createinstallmedia command with the following command:<\/p>\n<p><strong>codesign -s &#8211; -f createinstallmedia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manpagez.com\/man\/1\/codesign\/\">Codesign command<\/a> will produce a new signing code for createinstallmedia app and replace the old code signature with it.<\/p>\n<p>After obtaining a new code signature, you are now able to create a bootable macOS USB on Apple Silicon Mac with the createinstallmedia command.<\/p>\n[<strong>Update<\/strong>] If the codesign command returns an error, please replace the command with the following ones:<\/p>\n<p><strong>cd \/Applications\/Install\\ macOS\\ <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Monterey.app<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>find . -type f -exec codesign -s &#8211; -f \"<strong>{}<\/strong>\" \\;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This will codesign the entire macOS install app. In my example, it is macOS Monterey. You need to replace the name with the one you are going to use.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fix_2_Download_a_New_Copy_of_macOS_Installer_from_Mac_App_Store\"><\/span>Fix #2: Download a New Copy of macOS Installer from Mac App Store<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To create a bootable USB for Mac, we need a copy of macOS installer app, which is published in Mac App Store by default. However, you won&#8217;t be able to find all versions of macOS installer app. For example, My MacBook Pro is currently running macOS Monterey. Only Monterey and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/8-essential-apps-you-should-install-on-mac-ventura-in-2023\/\">Ventura installer apps<\/a> are available for download. Big Sur and earlier versions are not visible.<\/p>\n<p>As a consequence, a lot of people download the installer app outside of Mac App Store, which might lack the valid code signature.\u00a0 This is the reason why you could not create a bootable macOS USB with the <em>createinstallmedia<\/em> command.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1091\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/monterey.png\" alt=\"monterey\" width=\"800\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/monterey.png 800w, https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/monterey-300x135.png 300w, https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/monterey-768x345.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To fix this, please download macOS install app from Mac App Store or legit website such as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mrmacintosh.com\/\">Mr.Macintosh<\/a>. Those sources have legit code signing certificate.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fix_3_Use_Another_App_to_Create_Bootable_USB\"><\/span>Fix #3: Use Another App to Create Bootable USB<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Terminal is the default method on Mac for creating <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/create-macos-bootable-usb-from-windows-10.html\"   title=\"macOS bootable USB\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">macOS bootable USB<\/a>. However, it is not the once choice. Apps like MDS and UUByte DMG Editor are very popular GUI solution to do the same task.<\/p>\n<p>For <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twocanoes.com\/products\/mac\/mac-deploy-stick\/\">MDS<\/a> (Mac Deploy Stick), you can download macOS install app within it and create a bootable installer afterwards. Both of the features are free of use.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1022\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/create-bootable-usb-mds.png\" alt=\"create bootable usb mds\" width=\"700\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/create-bootable-usb-mds.png 700w, https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/create-bootable-usb-mds-300x186.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/download\/dmg-editor.dmg\">UUByte DMG Editor<\/a>, please download a copy of macOS dmg file from UUByte.com and make a bootable macOS USB from the dmg file.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-905\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/dmg-editor.png\" alt=\"dmg editor\" width=\"700\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/dmg-editor.png 700w, https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/dmg-editor-300x224.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n[<strong>Update<\/strong>]: MDS may also report an error that says \"<strong>there are an error creating the bootable USB on \/Volumes\/Untitled. Please verify that the disk is not <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/how-to-format-write-protected-sd-card-on-android\/\">write protected<\/a> and that\u00a0 the macOS installer is not\u00a0 in a protected location.<\/strong>\" In fact, the USB is fully readable and writable. This is a software bug.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1094\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/mds-error.png\" alt=\"mds error\" width=\"800\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/mds-error.png 800w, https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/mds-error-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/mds-error-768x468.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\n<p>The above workarounds are effective to fix the issue. If you can&#8217;t create a bootable <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uubyte.com\/blog\/can-you-install-macos-ventura-to-a-usb-flash-drive\/\">macOS installer USB<\/a> on M1 Mac, please try the tricks one by one. I am sure one of them will help you solve the problem you came across.
